I do very little productive on the phone. It's great for shopping lists, much reduces the chance I'll write a list and leave it at home. Twitter on the move, some casual games, a book or two (for when stuck somewhere unexpected) but that's about it. I can't write at any speed on that, even with swype, I'd hate to think about spreadsheets or the like.
Major graphics apps on a phone? Any serious graphic designer's going to laugh at that. They tend to work with massive screens, not pocket-sized ones. I couldn't imagine doing any photoshop work on something that fits into a bag, much less a pocket.
If I want to work away from my desktop then, depending one what I'm likely to be doing, I'll pack iPad or laptop. iPad for writing, reading, annotating pdfs, laptop for anything more demanding.
I'd kill for full-blown MS word or Windows Live Writer on the iPad, that would eliminate a fair bit of need for the laptop, but it's still no way a replacement for my desktop PC, and that's not just in terms of apps, also shear power, storage capacity and screen size

I do wonder though when we'll be able to view a HUD of some sort, whether built into contact lenses or projected via an attachment to my glasses, so that I can just use the phone as a connection point, and VPN into something better, allowing you the ability to work without a physical computer in front of you. Once we have that, who cares about the display size of the phone, and it could become super-small with no detriment.

Now there you go. Some type of projection so that the screen is an adequate size when I need it to be and a mechanism for input, maybe a projected keyboard & pad, and I'm good. Otherwise, nope.

That's a good water-cooler topics, what games do you play on your phone? I haven't found much that's really kept my attention for more than a month or so.

While I think we'll have that at some point, and I look forward to it even though the projected keyboard is going to take a long time to get used to, I don't look forward to the first time I run across an idiot using one while he or she walks on a crowded sidewalk. Or while driving.

This might work now. I tried the eyeglasses for the iPod at the airport. Actually was pretty good for watching video. Not sure it supports enough resolution to do desktop work, but maybe it would.

I used Evernote on the iPad for notes at conferences/meetings. works well.
For blogging, blogpress and the WordPress apps work well

The phone is purely casual games, they're for the 5 minutes waiting for a take-out, stuck in a supermarket queue, etc.

Hungry Shark
Star Traders
The iPad's for slightly longer, more complex games, the PC/laptop are for the really hard-core games

I'll have to look some of those up. Other than Solitaire, BubbleXplode, Pocket Tanks and NS Hex, I don't play much on the phone at all and those last 3 don't get played often any more.
On the desktop, there's much more to play, Civ V, City of Heroes, Europa Universalis III, EuroRails, etc...

For note taking, sure. For proper writing, no. I'm doing more tech-editing again at the moment, I'd love to be able to do it from the iPad, but unless there's a Word-equivalent that supports the review/comment features, I can't.
For blogging, blogpress and the WordPress apps work well
I like blogpress, the wordpress app I tried once and deleted fast. Since I use LiveWriter on my desktop I'd really like one that could save as the livewriter format so I could just sync the files and be done. Since I almost always have code in my blog posts, I need to finish off on desktop/laptop so I can copy the code over from SSMS. Am not trying to write T-SQL on iPad with no intellisense and no parsing.

I am resisting Civ 5. Want, but...
At the moment, Witcher (1), Anno 1404, Fallout 3, Farcry 2, Mass Effect 2 on XBox. Have Dragon Age 1 waiting (yes, I'm behind). Heaven knows what I'm going to do end of this year. Skyrim and The Old Republic. Starcraft 2 part 2 soon...
Need a vacation just to catch up on games....

Can you just use Google Documents from the iPad?

I need to try Starcraft 2 at some point.
I hate to say it, but I think Civ V has been dissapointing. There's some good things about it, but there's no progress graphs or charts any more, no flipping territory through culture, no animations at the end when you win the game. You have to play on-line through Steam which is especially painful when you've bene playing by one strategy and they update the rules in the middle of your game and the next time you start it up everything is different. There have also been a LOT of bugs, realtions with other nations is inconsistent at best. I still play it quite a bit, but nothing like I played Civ IV.
I'd also like to get around to Rock Band 3 eventually.

There an offline version of that? (Internet access? What's that?)
Do they support Word's review/comment features? Word's tables, formatting, etc? Can I take a Word doc using a specific template, open in Google docs, save and lose none of the formatting?

For me it's a phone. Maybe shopping lists, text messages. Nothing else because there's no compute power, no significant storage, no sensible input mechanism, no sensible display. Doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see all that fixed, though.
Major graphics apps on a phone? Any serious graphic designer's going to laugh at that. They tend to work with massive screens, not pocket-sized ones. I couldn't imagine doing any photoshop work on something that fits into a bag, much less a pocket.
I'm not sure how small we can get a pixel these days, maybe something that fits close to the eyes would work - could we get 2000dpi on a gadget I could have on the bridge of my nose? I think that would be OK for most graphic design.
If I want to work away from my desktop then, depending one what I'm likely to be doing, I'll pack iPad or laptop. iPad for writing, reading, annotating pdfs, laptop for anything more demanding.
I looked at an iPAD and decided to stick to the laptop.
