Wait, you can't back up a log in simple mode? Can't I stop the service and just copy the file? :w00t:

Sure. But before you start the service again, make sure you open up all the files in a non-SQL compatible reader (something that shows you all the fancy non-text characters) and save the file in that format.

That'll make sure your data never has to worry about corruption again. Promise. @=)

That reminds me of the person who stated they had no backups and had just issued the DROP DATABASE command ... oops

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

Those non-text characters - are they a form of encryption? Then the data is safe.

Otherwise select it all, and see you have wingdings as a font choice.

Suddenly I'm wondering if it would be worth my time to write up my "Nitty-Gritty of Database Backups" SQL Saturday presentation into a series of articles.

The big question is (knowing there are probably a zillion articles out there on the subject anyway), how many people would read them?

And should perhaps I cover something like "the myths and assumptions of database backups" in an article for SQL Server Standard instead?

    Thoughts?

I guess you missed the news, SQL Server Standard is dead, again. Unless it has had a miraculous resurrection recently.

You know, I just learned how to recover from that without using Timewarp 😀

Yup - it's dead. They will finish those already in queue and are not accepting any more. I was disappointed.

The question of what reality is is actually easily answered. Reality is what we agree it is. Change our agreement, change our reality.

Well this is the mantra of postmodernism (that there is no objective truth) but it's untenable. Jointly believing or agreeing to something false isn't to change reality, it's merely to share a common perception which is very different. Plato's shadows weren't reality even though they very much seemed so and were agreed to be so. The big irony is that at its logical culmination, postmoderism says you're objectively wrong if you don't agree with its theory that there are no objective truths.

GAH! I just found out about it last week and emailed Grant to ask some questions.

I guess I missed the "dead" post. @=(

Almost Kit, reality is whatever YOU think it is. Your reality is different from everyone else's reality, and THAT's reality.

Not to get into a philosophical argument (cause otherwise the Secret Police of the Thread will probably come bashing down my door, or infect my computer; whichever is worse... ;-)), yes, my reality is different from yours in that we have different viewpoints, but the reality between us is what we agree it is, like there are buildings and cars are a certain shape and do certain things, which baseball/football/soccer/basketball... teams are the best, where the best BBQ is to be found, what The Thread's plan is for world domination, you know, things like that.

Forgot about 13th floor, never realized how similar they were...

They both deal with simulated realities and have some action, though in The 13th Floor, the action is cloaked in a murder mystery. Not to ruin it for anyone else who hasn't seen it, I did like the way it dealt with a simulated reality.

The Matrix does have an awesome gun fight scene though that The 13th Floor can't match. But then, the gun fight scenes in Equilibrium blow The Matrix ones away in my opinion. 🙂 John Preston rules!

Is anyone game for discussing BBQ again? I headed to Houston next week to see family, anyone have any suggestions on where to go for BBQ there or anywhere on the trek between Phoenix and Houston?

    Big Daddy's BBQ[/url]

Have the Baked Potato w/meat (I prefer it with brisket but they have several meats available to select from). It's a lot of food. They were the best we found in seven years of living there.

That is cruel and unusual punishment.

But we welcome the discussion on BBQ.
