analysis service client tool

  • Does SQL server analysis service have a client tool?

I try to figure out some license issues, I found on some developer's PC only have analysis service installed, could it be only a tool for analysis service, if so , then we should not need a license for that.

There is a file in their pc. - msmdsrv.exe

    Thanks

  • The client tools are...

SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio - this is used by AS developers to define dimensions, cubes etc

SQL Server Managment Studio - used to administer cube once deployed

Excel (and many others) - user interface to cube

The first 2 are part of the SQL Server client tools. If they weren't installed, grab the installation disks and update the installation.

  • Thank you.

What I want to figure out is license issue. I don't have access to their PC to check out.

But I have a tool called Discovery that collects information through network, and the software they installed.

What I find is on some PC they have only analysis service installed, so I'm not sure if we need to buy a developer version of sqls for those PC or not. And on a microsoft site about microsoft license FAQ:

    Q. Do I need a separate license to run the SQL Server tools and analysis services?

    A. No, a separate license is not required. However, any device that has SQL Server tools or technologies installed must have a valid SQL Server license.

    I'm confusing about the above.

I know if we install a component of SqL server on a separate box, like SSRS, SSAS, SSIS, it needs a separate license for each box.

But above FAQ, does it mean we don't need to buy license for SSAS, or does it mean some other client tool?

    Thanks.

  • There are many licensing options - you really need to know what your organisation has purchased.

In fact, without that, any advice you get (including this advice) does not really tell you what your actual legal position is.

If you have SQL Server developer edition, the person/PC that has that license can run any of the SQL products on their PC.

If you have server licenses only - I think (and I am really not all that sure about this) that you are only allowed to connect to that server. Installing server components (e.g Analsysis Services - which is what msmdsrv.exe is) can't be installed workstations. You can install the client tools (Management Studio, BIDS)

If you have server plus cal licenses, you still can't install the server components but you can connect to the server if you have a cal and you can install the client tools on you workstation.

Someone else may well reply to your questions as well and they may well have a different answer to mine. Quite frankly, that wouldn't surprise me.

So, read and re-read the license conditions for the product(s) you have purchased is my best advice
