Daily Coping 27 May 2022

,

I started to add a daily coping tip to the SQLServerCentral newsletter and to the Community Circle, which is helping me deal with the issues in the world. I’m adding my responses for each day here. All my coping tips are under this tag.

Today’s tip is to think about a journey you are on in life and your progress.

This is a small journey, with a bit of irony today.

I’ve been practicing yoga for about a decade. My wife got me to try it and I loved it. I’ve moved through a few studios, and even have a few favorites on YouTube.

In all that time, one of the things I’ve heard often from various instructors is “knee to nose” from downward dog. This involves being on your hands and feet, in an inverted “V” position.

DownwardDog

From here, you lift one leg, then you bring it under your body, bending the knee and bending your spine, attempting to touch your knee to your nose. When I first tried this, I could see my knee coming close to my face, but I never thought it would touch.

In fact, for over 9 years, I have tried sometimes but often not, to touch my knee to my nose. It’s never really been close.

In early 2022, I changed my diet and lost some weight. As I moved below 220 lbs, I could get the knee closer. A couple weeks ago, I tried again one day and my knee brushed my nose. I almost fell because I was shocked. Only the right knee, but the left one is close and I did the right once three times that day.

Quite the journey for me.

Not today, however. I have ankle surgery today, so no yoga, or not much, for a few weeks.
