  First, learn how to use all of the built-in functions of SQL Server/T-SQL because, as with any language, that's where a lot of the performance is.

  Second, read and deeply study the following book.  I did a review on the first release of the book and it's a must have.  I've not read the 3rd edition but, if Grant Fritchey did the same kind of job he did on the first edition, this book will be to die for.

  Once you're done with those two things, then you'll know enough to read, study, and understand Grant's other book...
