Much less enjoyable are the people who have decided that because I’m an expert, whatever that means, that I have to have all the answers, all the time.
This sounds more like something that i put a bit on myself instead of it being the expectations from others.

Much less enjoyable are the people who have decided that because I’m an expert, whatever that means, that I have to have all the answers, all the time.
This sounds more like something that i put a bit on myself instead of it being the expectations from others.
I wish it were otherwise, but it's true. I know I've got giant gaps in my knowledge, but others assume I've got some secret stash of super-knowledge. It ain't there.

Great article by Mr. Ferris, Grant. And great observations (I don't want to call it "advice" because I think that wouldn't be in the same good spirit it was offered) by both you and Mr. Ferris. Thanks for taking the time to write this up.

I've considered running a blog myself for quite some while now (at least a few years) but whenever I think "this sounds like something others might be interested in" it doesn't take long until I think again and decide that it's not worth neither writing nor reading that article. Not to think about coming up with a somewhat useable Design for a blog and what should be the contents? I'd probably be stuck at this part for another 2 years without even being able to try something out.
And the main question: What for? Certainly not as a GitHub Repo replacement - just have a look around linux blogs and you'll see what I mean. Fame? I consider myself famous enough in the commercial world that once I reveal who is behind what entry on my CV it ends up being rather a question of "how long do I have time to stay?" instead of "if" I could help solve that particular challenge. No, I don't need or want fame or better public visibility - if someone really has a performance problem and really needs an expert he / she will find me, the question is wether it's sooner or later.
First thing I tell (freely and by heart) potential customers that I'm no C# / Java / Full Stack whatever Dev, if you need one of those topics badly search for someone else, I deal with SQL Server and that's about it and even there I'm far from perfect or a walking Wikipedia, especially when it comes to TSQL I'm rather on the asking than answering side around here.
If I have / find something interesting enough and it's related to SQL Server I'm happy about being able to share it through SSC - this does help the content to get wider attention right away and I don't have to maintain a Website, got enough Computing and other projects I take on regularily like "make my home ready for any kind of 4K+ streaming" or "I have this thing I'd like to have solved … how about IoT for that?".
No blog to maintain = more time to spend with rack enclosures, asset tracking and other things which I prefer over some Internet fame. Just imagine that endlessly happy guy with 2 Juniper Switches and a 3 VLAN Setup who doesn't need anything to be fixed because it was made to work and last - I get my cup of coffee offered any time I'm nearby.

FWIW, the "relatively" sane *grin* members of our community respect and appreciate you and all other authors, bloggers, posters, etc. that have given guys like me the inside scoop on the topics you graced us with your experience and knowledge. Normal people would recognize that it's impossible to be an expert at everything. IMHO The "blindsiders" should be ashamed of themselves for putting any of you in a position of discomfort. The rest of us are grateful for any nugget of knowledge given and applaud your willingness to provide it rather than confront you about some obscure bit that probably cost hours, days or even weeks of research to prepare for the ...what did you call it...? "Stump the Chump?"
Please keep your articles, tips, posts and discoveries coming; don't let the few unsavory types diminish your sense of humor.

If I were going to pick a DBA celebrity to have all the answers, I would pick Kendra. I would ask Steve to be my personal mentor, but I have read his advice about shirts.

The parts of our brain that we use on the job tend to become the most dominant, and that carries over into our daily lives and off hours. My personal observation has been that IT workers are more level headed and trustworthy than the general public, and certainly more so than other industries like sports or entertainment. Big personalities within the startup culture can get a bit crazy, but I don't consider that IT. I feel safe interacting with other folks in our industry of coders and data professionals.
