    Strangely enough, I can connect to sa using sqlcmd

    Is it possible that registry entries could cause this? Or would reinstalling SSMS fix this? I don't want to try to many things as this is a live environment

    No, character sets are same on both servers

    I have also tried a incorrect password on the 2nd server and it threw out the same error in the alert log.

    Yes, But, both the sa and my test account are enabled and I can connect to both from another server.

    No, I checked this by creating a new login with same password and that worked.

    The copy database was a bit older and didn't contain that column. I created a new test db and restored this mornings backup.
