Are the 5mm records all the records in the table or are there more than 5mm? If that's the whole table, use truncate. If not, you can batch the deletes...

David has some good advice. I would personally determine the database size, allow for 3-4 months data growth, and then make sure you can reindex your largest table. Then shrink...
