I agree with Gail, no tempdb issue with backups.
Something else must have run.

I believe this can be done with disk replication, but no other way in 2008. In 2012 you have Availability Groups, which do not depend on some type of shared...

The main issue is that a login occurs to the instance. There isn't an access point I'm aware of that traps your access to a database. You might connect directly...

AFAIK, the native Windows backup utility doesn't back up the SQL Server logs. You should use the SQL Server backup command (BACKUP LOG TO DISK) and then the Windows Backup...
