Script out replication, always, and keep it handy. There are times you'll need to reset it up.
Use that to move replication to a new, SQL 2014, instance.

Interesting question. If I create a snapshot in a clean db/log, I get only 3 log records. They are the

You can easily rebuild a heap table starting from SQL Server 2008.
ALTER TABLE [TableName] REBUILD
