If the files are large, you still have to copy them. There's no magic SQL Server way to get them to the new drive.

Depending on how you structure your SAN, you might not get benefits from splitting out on the SAN.
You have some good reasons, but I've not seen any really good articles...

Did you have any filters applied besides the time? It's possible that something held you up, but it didn't take a long time itself to complete.

I grab reads/sec, transactions/sec, and some disk activity as a baseline in addition to above. Nice to have when someone says "it's slow"
