Apply SP4 and this includes all cumulative patches before it. Be aware that there are a number of post SP4 fixes, including SP4 issues with AWE.

Shouldn't need to. I'd add some logging code to this proc. Make a table, insert into it at various places from the proc the value of variables and what's happening....

How important is this for performance? If it's a batch, send a few emails here and there, I might stick with the cursor. Not sure a temp table helps here.

sp_recompile for the proc? Reboot the server?
If a bad plan gets chosen on the stored proc (happens, not sure why sometimes), then you might get stuck with it.
How complicated is...

Use a VM if you need to. Grab an external drive, install Virtual Server and run SS2K5 in there.
