They shouldn't be allowed to run the same job at the same time. They weren't re-entrant in 2000 AFAIK. Are you sure there aren't two jobs doing the same thing?

What exactly is in the maintenance plan if you open it up? What steps?

Restoring could be faster, though I'm not sure if the restore process is tolerant of network issues. The backup process is not.

Also, just add space to your data file. indexing consumes space and you might be too low for it to run if you don't have autogrow enabled.
