The MS Press book I got (blue) was pre-release, and had lots of errors.
Honestly I think most of these books cover 80-90% the same material, and they'll work for you....

I would drop and recreate log shipping. Make sure you are a sysadmin when doing it, and make sure you server is correctly registered in sysservers.

Don't shrink. Manage your space, make sure you have enough free space to handle operations, and leave it at that. Shrink is for emergencies, not maintenance.

Check the white paper, but definitely move the files to their own LUNs. That will let you better troubleshoot where the issues are.
