Did you upgrade SQL 2000, or add a 2008 instance or do something else? If you have two instances, you might be eating up memory as well.

Have you run this from just SSMS or SQLCMD?
I doubt this is corrupting tempdb, but it would be good to run this without a VB client to see more details.
