I tend to agree with GSquared above. The only other separation I worry about is backups. Data backups should not be with data files, and log backups should not be...

The AD group is a good idea, but you should also have a role (group) in SQL Server for different permissions. Don't grant permissions to users, always use a role.

Multiple instances are being used for two main reasons

1 - licensing (some cheaper benefits here over separate servers/VMs)

2 - tempdb loads - If you have heavy tempdb (and lower memory/CPU),...

It's a load issue, not a number of databases. I know people that have had upwards of 500 databases on an instance, and it's worked well, but each was low...

We've talked about this, but the main issue is the person asking the question is the least qualified to say if something is the answer. Often a suggestion is made...

I'm with GSquared. I've never seen a reason to move SQL Server binaries anywhere. It's the data, log, and backups that are important.

I don't think you can change this. The tabbed layout was a fundamental change.

We used a variation of this for weekly releases for well over a year, which included database design changes.

We could spend a few hours on db design, debating the changes...
