    You'll need to know the current path to your Master DB and error log files.  You can then issue the following from a command prompt:

     

    sqlservr [-sinstance_name] [-dmaster_path

        [-eerror_log_path] [-lmaster_log_

    This sounds like an authentication problem. 

    By external, I'm assuming you mean another server?  In your back up plan, you'll need to use the full UNC path to the backup...
