I was just following this thread and understood the requirement and I also executed your solution and found that it satisfies the requirement...but not able to understand how you achieved...

Summary.txt will give you the list of errors during installation.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log
There are more log files as well...

Actually, this is what I have granted to the user..I tried to use the db_backupoperator_role. It did not help.
I was just wondering is there any other way.....
