What port are you using - the default 1433 ?
Is the Browser Service running ?
Have you checked Active Directory to verify the SPN ?

The line: "DLL must contain function Execute" might be pointing yo an 'extended' stored procedure.
If that os so 'sysadmin' role is usually required. But only the software vendor knows...

If your SQL Server is on VM/ESX, the 'frozen/thawed' messages could be from what they call a 'VMDK'.
On the other hand it could also be due to having backup 'agent'...

We have performed a multitude of upgrades from SQL 2000 to SQL 2008 R2 (and still habe many more instances to go).

Look at the drive letter(s) in your restore error messages.
Then go into the cluster administrator and see if those drive letters are in the SQL disk group.
