Depending on what you want to capture, you can use any of the three types of Auditing available. CDC, CT and SQL Audit. There are articles here in this website...

Do you have any good network admins there? If so, ask them to do some packet sniffing on the wire. Since it is SQL Authentication, the authentication usually comes in...

Yes it is. The behavior changes even for different level of Service packs unfortunately.

You can check the performance counter on the OS level using performance dashboard.
