2008R2 and 2012 will live quite happily, i've had no issues with both installed in a cluster

For this configuration ensure your nodes are well specced to handle both instances in the event of a failover
Node 1
Instance 1 active for Application A
Instance 2 passive for Applications B...

Unforunately, mgmt doesn't see it that way and I think I've convinced them it's not.
Doesnt matter what they believe, point of fact sql server does not provide load balancing...

Virtualisation is performed for consolidation purposes not performance, not every sql server is a suitable virtualisation candidate, this must be remembered when deciding what to virtualise

Carefully check the history of the copy and restore jobs, my guess is you'll have some error messages on the restore job.
Do you have any trans log backups runnin on...
