a clustered dtc is no longer mandatory for sql server 2008, it was for 2005.
There certainly used to be an issue in sql 2005 where a clustered instance of sql...

no need to stop a SQL server database, they are transactionally consistent even with users connected

Standalone or clustered instances?
For standalone you can use precreated INI file configurations and point setup.exe to the INI file.
The other option is to build sql server into your server image...
