This is not an error it is default cluster resource Failover policy behaviour.
Open the properties for the alwayson cluster resource and change the default from 1 failure in 6 hours...

do not restore the system databases, instead migrate the objects (login,jobs,etc)
A direct attach\upgrade of the user databases to sql server 2012 is supported.

a clustered uninstall takes minutes to uninstall and is a clean way of removing the instance, you may then install your chosen sql server edition to re install.

I could get around this by installing to a folder on the mount point instead of the mount directly.

In this case the entire netwrok may go down.
Take the instances offline during this period then and keep the downtime short.

Well, irrespective of where you think model is, the C drive is where the service is looking.
Has this master db backup come from this server originally?
Check the service startup parameters...

The error is pretty clear the model database cannot be opened.
Check the path in the errorlog, is it correct, are the permissions correct on the folder?
