you cannot convert a standalone instance into a clustered instance, you will need to form a cluster on the 2 nodes and install new clustered instances and then migrate any...

So my main question is: given that we are in a VMWare HA environment, is clustering necessary?
A windows cluster on VMware has restrictions, you can't easily migrate the cluster...

if you're replicating between 2 nodes they both cant be primary. One will be primary one will be secondary, it seems you are after either database mirroring or AlwaysOn Availability...
