You do 2 reports.

Never tried that.
My reports are really complexe... but in the business analysis phase. Once that part is over it's usually a simple matrix or just a flat out list...

In this case you definitely don't want the 2 indexes. Only 1 is required.

Yes it should be faster to run when there's less fragmentation.
I would add that you can consider doing alter index... WITH MAXDOP
That way you could keep most of the processing...

What are you trying to sort by anyways? I've seen overly complex solution to sort by date or month in the past !
