I confirm that behavior on sql server 2000 dev edition.
however this doesn't fail :

What would the query look like if you had C,N,Y,O as possible id2?
Would you have 4 derived tables now?

If you did EXEC sp_refreshview 'v_func'
then select * from v_func
then recompile the function
then select * from function, I think it would work.

That's the eas way out... But he would have to code each question manually in the query, or have a single scoring plan. Which he didn't seem to...

Seems like the score depends on the question.
I would add another table like so :
QuestionsScoresRanges
QuestionID, ScoreFrom, ScoreTo, PointsValue
so you'd put in a few lines for each questions like
