Thank you Allen, your suggestion did the trick! I ended up blowing out SQL 2000, reinstalling it, loading sp 3a and restoring the database. It seems to work...

The origin server uses MDAC 2.6 SP2 and the destination server uses MDAC 2.6 RTM

Both are SQL 2000 on 2000 servers. I don't know what a MDAC is.
