I backed up my transaction log file using this:
BACKUP LOG iTest2_AELetters TO DISK = N'nul'
(yes I know this breaks the log chain - it's expected in this intance)

To extend what Jeff said, when SQL Server reads from disk it actually reads an Extent which contains 8 pages. The narrower NCI means more data is also read...
