It sounds to me that the memory is set to default on the database engine and in turn SQL will take all the memory on the machine if not set...

I always recommend full install too. Upgrade-install doesn't give me a warm-and-fuzzy at all.
DITTO! Upgrading is painful and I avoid it all costs, backup, backup, backup, uninstall, install!...

If itβs your dev. environment this is what I would do. Backup your stuff first all of it, Uninstall 08R2 completely, including the all folders. install 2012.
