Do a test... build a RAM DISK and put the database on it. You'll soon find out that putting the database in memory can't make up for an improperly...

The SELECT query is for capturing the system info; has nothing to do with the trigger.
I know that... I'm suggesting that it's giving you bad information.

I'd suggest the creation of a Calendar table. It has many uses including this one.
