Let's take that one step further. You can't actually have an empty string in a date, time, or datetime data type. If you try to store and empty...

Can you post the version optimized for varchar(8000) or varchar(max)?
You bet... see attached. I've included both the NVARCHAR(4000) and VARCHAR(8000) versions. The only differences are (of course)...
