Still learning SQL -- consider myself a newbie still after 2 yrs becuase I am still learning new things every day....

  • RE: Sorting taking most of the time of query

I don't understand most of your Order By clause. It looks like you're sorting on variables, but they shouldn't change throughout the query, so they shouldn't be in the...

  • RE: Millions of records with no index! Query kills Transaction Log

If you just need that one column, that's fine.

If you need more columns, like if you uncomment some of your joins, you'll need to add more columns to the index.

    A...

  • RE: DENSITY & SELECTIVITY

Density is basically selectivity. High selectivity is good.

In Books Online, there's a good article on the subject:

  • RE: Millions of records with no index! Query kills Transaction Log

    No. Definitely not.

I'm suggesting that, if an appropriate column or set of columns exists, a clustered index could be created on those. That would probably be something that...

  • RE: spike in full scans/sec

You can create traces with customer filters. Books Online has the details on how to do that.

  • RE: Millions of records with no index! Query kills Transaction Log

An index that covers the join columns (and any where columns) will definitely speed things up. Even better yet, if you have the disk space and time to do...

  • RE: RAID configuration suggestions -> BAARF and SAME

SAME is certainly very easy to implement.

I wouldn't use it, for the simple reason that having data and log files on the same array limits your recovery options in the...

  • RE: ORing or ANDing with INNER and OUTER joins

You can put anything you'd put in a Where clause, into a join clause. Some things might be a bad idea, but you can technically do it.
