Update and select don't necessarily end up with the same plan. For that matter, the same select can end up with different plans sometimes, under the right circumstances.

I don't think it's all that many years away. Prices are coming down like crazy, and capacity and speed and reliability are way up every year.

There are a couple of easy ways to get simple basics in T-SQL.
One would be get a For Dummies book, or something like that.
Another would be look stuff up in...

You're almost certainly going to be better off looking for .NET versions, and plugging them in as CLR functions.

In SQL 2000, you pretty much have to do this in steps. Select the top 4, then select the top 2 of that but with reversed ordering, then select...

Reviewing the code does make some sense. You might be able to make something more efficient.
But if the proc does what's needed, why not just use it as-is? ...
