It looks to me like what you need is a running total calculation. Do a search for that, and it should give you what you need.

My default decision is to help the person. The only reason I wouldn't would be because of some prior commitment conflicting with it.

Having one app for each choice doesn't actually reduce the number of decisions to make, it just increases the number of apps you need to learn how to use. ...

The reason I use cursors for this kind of thing, instead of "quirky update" string building, is that I can wrap each command in error handling much more easily.

It's pretty much a special form of self-join. Not sure what you mean by "simulated tables".
