Where I've seen that before, it's been an issue with creating the encryption certificate. Have you done that?

Then it's definitely security. If they can find each other, then it's not "does not exist" and is "or access denied".
Are you using SQL security at both ends, or...

I'd check DNS next. "Server does not exist" may mean it can't resolve the name.
Can you ping the servers from each other?

RedGate's SQL Refactor can do table splitting for you, but it might have trouble biting off that many rows all at once.

I have a copy of SQL 2008 Dev Edition installed on Vista Ultimate at home. Includes SSRS, SSAS, and all the rest.
You just have to patch it up to...

Is it possible that any permissions have been changed? If so, you'd be able to log in, and that would make the linked server not give a security error....
