Is this something you can do with a stored procedure, instead of a view? If so, stored procedures can do dynamic SQL and could build a select statement each...

Can you check the firewall's logs to see what's trying to get through? That'll pretty much tell you what you need to let through, won't it?

First, why have the hierarchy in two tables? It's more usual to have one table and a parent ID that refers back to the same table.

The closest you could get to what you're trying to do would be some sort of pivot operation. T-SQL does those, but not very well.

Honestly, the best way to find out how much tempdb you need is, set it to a best guess, and let it auto-grow.
