There are whole books on the subject, plus huge portions of websites like MSDN.
Do you prefer books or online research, or some mix of the two?

Profiler will create a performance hit on the server. Saving the data to tables directly is the worst for that.
The best bet on that kind of thing is running...

Is there a difference?
i.e. does a temp table (#mytable) write to the disk in tempdb?
vs. a table variable...

You'll run into performance issues because of I/O way before you run into hard limits on the number of traces.

Some data doesn't compress well.
Numbers, for example, don't compress worth a darn. Text and binary compress the best, usually, but even they have limits.
