If there are only a few thousand rows in the table what the heck is causing it to dump millions of ID values? That's fairly odd behavior.

Start by looking at sys.dm_exec_query_stats. You'll need to use sys.dm_exec_sql_text to see the query being executed. This information is since last server restart.

When you say backup, do you mean that you have a script that looks similar to this:
BACKUP DATABASE mydatabasename TO DISK = '\\someserver\someshare\mydatbasename.bak'
Or are you doing something else entirely?
