So locks are bad, but potentially inconsistent data and incorrect results are OK?
Nolock is not a free lunch, it is not a 'required' hint when querying a production database....

As I posted over at SQLTeam...
If checkDB reports errors it means that it found errors. They may be transient IO errors.
Are you seeing any 825 errors in your error log?...

Yes they do, just like user databases do. There's nothing special about the system databases that will save them from having the IO subsystem mangle their files.

From the sound of it you could probably use Case statements.
You can, providing performance is not a major requirement.
