Strategy is simple - regular full backups so that when/if something happens, you don't have to recreate your logins, permissions, settings, jobs, SSIS packages, job history, backup history from scratch.

SQL 2008 intellisense isn't available in SQL 2005, and only works for SQL 2008 SSMS if working against a SQL 2008 server.

SAN? Has the SAN admin changed anything? Is the switch dedicated or shared? If shared, it is overutilised?
Are you sure nothing changed on the hardware?
