    Why do you rather want a meaningless number over a null? If you're going to be fixing the data up surely a null is easier to find than a meaningless...

    When you attach, explicitly remove the ldf in the dialog (if they didn't provide it). Or use CREATE DATABASE ... FOR ATTACH_REBUILD_LOG

    Thanks for your suggestion, I am getting a conversion error as my field is NVarchar and not a INT type. Any suggestions?

    Scalar udfs are incredibly slow. If you want to optimise the procedure you need to get rid of the UDFs, replace them with inline table-valued UDFs or subqueries.

    My solution would be to use a sequential operator, so whatever = NULL would be changed to a sequential number that us as administrators would know was a bogus...

    What you need there is to set up an application role (if you can change the app to use it). There are other better solutions, but that's the easiest

    Security is best done with security settings. Remove the people who don't need to update from db_datawriter or give then db_denydatawriter. Why can't you make a separate...

    Depends why SQL was installed. If it was installed to support some other app that's on your laptop (and a lot of apps use SQL Server Express), then uninstalling it...

    I am the only user that does inserts / updates/ deletes to the table.

    All of the other users can only do SELECTs against the table....so this means that...
