You have SSMS2k5 and SSMS2k8 installed, didn't you? This is a problem in the combination of both. Microsoft has a hotfix for SSMS2k5. SSMS2k8 should work with latest service pack.

Flo, are you getting your reads from SET STATISTICS IO ON? IIRC UDFs don't report IO correctly in this manner. Try getting them with Profiler.
