I would use CHARINDEX

WITH myString AS (

SELECT '001' AS num

UNION ALL

SELECT '002' AS num

UNION ALL

SELECT '002.' AS...

I would be careful using my version if the initial number of digits goes below 5 but hey! you can figure that one...

Use MAX(DATE) and GROUP BY (ID)

Quick suggestion, declare a table variable and do an insert-exec, the output of the exec goes in the variable, then discard it.
