I'm definitely an advocate of using a tool (pick one) to generate the change script. The tool catches all the gotchas, so doing the change becomes a whole lot less...

Lockwood and Adept also offer similar products, I think price is comparable, around $200 (I think).

Sounds big, but it really matters more how long it takes and what the possibility is that the code executing will get blocked by someone else. Definitely worth stress testing...

That's a nice solution, using the snapshot. Would handle views as well.

Totally ok. The default setting is that transactions can't be removed from the log until the logreader has processed them. As long as the logreader is running continuously this happens...

Typically pretty decent compression. Litespeed is nice, worth looking at, especially if you backup to disk first, then tape, where space may really be at a premium.
