We are in the habit of creating an alias for the SQL Server name so when the hardware is replaced all we do is simply point the dns alias...

I just found out that he is connecting to an Database Server instance from a Web Server using SQL Server 2005 Express.

He stated that he installed SQLServer2005_DTS.msi and SQLServer2005_BC.msi on...

I recovered a lot of SSIS Package Files that had a modify date of the current date.

It is really smart that the SSIS Packages are stored in the FIle System...

I do not like the File System.

I only use it in BIDS and deploy it to the server.

I need to think of other reasons.

I suspect that they do it because...

I prefer to store DTS & SSIS Packages in MSDB but where I currently work they use the file system.

It may be that they perceive it as easier to mange...

As a minimum I would have 5 drives if your budget allows.

-System drive 100GB

-Page file drive (20GB?)

-SQL Data drive

-SQL Log drive

-Tempdb drive

You can get away with three by merging...

On one of the boxes I inherited I have 24 GB of RAM. That is a bit excessive.

It currently has 140 GB of Disk space allocation from the SAN.

instead, i'd do the following:.

1. script out your jobs in the msdb database,

2. script out the logins...
