    On a single server, mirroring works between two instances.

    Mirroring has to (as far as i am aware) go from one database, to another of the same name....

    We dont have any prod 2k8 servers but i have run tests using my own instances and it works fine 2005 to 2008.

    Agree with George.

    I have two clusters like this and have found that the configuration manager tends to be mis-leading. Rely on Clust Admin and Services.msc (and of course ssms).

    To answer your question; if your waiting for tempdb to release space back to the os, you'll be waiting a long time. Cause it wont.

    Fair enough.

    You shoould be aware though that having a logfile shrink, grow, shrik, grow like this will eventually see it fragmented all over your disk leading to long io's.
