If it is an intermittent issue and sparsely occurs (doesn't happen for everybody when it does happen), then it could be a communications error with AD that is quickly resolved...

In properties you should also see a destination section. In the destination section is where the backup will be placed.

Another alternative is to use filegroups and move your specific tables into a separate filegroup. Then you can backup that filegroup individually.
