visual studio does this kind of thing few times,,,
bt never witnessed SSMS doing this.

seems like,,, an other transaction back up is being taken.
check, whether any other plan is running simultaneously !!

maintain your hourly backup in different files.
And size do depend on the transactions that is going in intermediate hour. 🙂
and rest, the masters (like Gail,, grant Etc. )have themselves provided...

I guess u r talking about "point of time recovery".
and for that u need to have Transactional logs back.
