Yes, the way I describe establishes a user User1 in the database. This is necessary first. Go into Enterprise Manager | Security. Click on the User1 login, right-click, choose Properties....

I've used the solution myself and I think Andy Warren has suggested it once or twice. With an alias, the mapping doesn't show up in Enterprise Manager, hence the reason...

Log on to the SQL Server locally.
Start | Settings | Control Panel
Bring up the Licensing applet.
Select Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 as the Product and click on the Add Licenses button.

You'll need to stop it manually. Proper steps are:
1) Copy source folder off of CD (\x86\data)
2) Remove Read-only attribute from folder and files
3) Run rebuildm.exe
The issue is a known bug...

Yes, unless the login is a member of the sysadmin role for the server. Does the login only have dbo rights to a particulr database (or databases)?

Go back and check the SQL Server logs from the time of the power outage and you can verify if SQL Server was shutdown gracefully.
