there might be various factors which affects this, are you backing directly to the tape, can you post in your SQL, so every one can have a look.

30 GB is not a problem , its relatively normal, as posted earlier check the extension of the file. 🙂

This is a very open Question, Answers would be depends, can you give a bit more information about the database numbers and sizes, that will be more helpful
